They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker–and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately, he expects her gratitude–and servitude.

But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.

My thoughts…

I had Chicagoland Vampires series on my to be read list for quite some time, since I started reading paranormal books. What took me so long to read this? It has everything that I enjoy reading about; a strong heroine, a sexy Master vampire, a best friend relationship and great side characters. It’s entertaining, smart, sexy, humorous and delightful.

Merit, a graduate student is attacked by a rogue vampire while walking on campus late at night. The vampire was stopped when other vampires scared it away. The only way for Merit to survive the attack was to become a vampire herself. Ethan Sullivan, Master vampire of Cadogan House, changed and saved Merit. Ethan is now her Master.

Beautiful, sexy, strong and confident, Ethan expects full loyalty from his vampires. He expects Merit's full gratitude and servitude, but of course, Merit isn't happy to be a vampire. Ethan will soon find out how stubborn and challenging Merit is. The rogue vampire who first attacked her is not done with her, someone out there still wants her dead and is killing other young women. Merit must now learn how to protect herself by weapon training and learning to fight.

“You have to call Darth Sullivan your 'Liege'?"
I grinned. "Only if I expect him to answer.”

I really liked Merit, she’s just this normal, down to earth woman that has been thrown into one hell of a plot twist in her quiet life. Merit is a strong, confident woman who had a tough childhood. With a father who wants to control her, she tries her best to be independent and to be herself. She’s a bookworm at heart, and now she’s a kickass vampire. There is this sexual tension between Ethan and Merit, they’re so attracted to each other, but none of them is willing submit to the other. It’s definitely going to get interesting between these two.

“Do you understand what I’m offering you?"
"Do you understand that it’s not 1815?"
"It’s not unusual for Masters to have Consorts."
"Yes, and your current Consort’s in my kitchen right now. If you need . . . relieving, talk to her."
"As much as it pains me to say it, Amber isn’t you."
"I don’t even know what that means. Should I—What? Be flattered that while you don’t like me, you’re willing to sacrifice just to get into my pants?”
― Chloe Neill, Some Girls Bite

Mallory is Merit’s best friend; she is just as stubborn and is hilarious. As it turns out, Mallory is a sorceress. Catcher is another fabulous sexy character and a sorcerer. He teaches both Merit and Mallory how to use their power and become what they were meant to be. Jeff and Merit’s grandfather are also there to guide her along the way.

“He's twenty-nine. And what did you think he was going to look like?"
She shrugged.
"You know-old. Grizzled. Long white beard. Scruffy robes. Loveable, smart, a little absent minded."
I bit back a grin.
" I said 'sorcerer,' not 'Dumbledore.' So he's hot. It could be worse.”
― Chloe Neill, Some Girls Bite

“Asking about someone’s animal is the shifter equivalent of pulling a ruler and asking a guy to whip it out.”
― Chloe Neill, Some Girls Bite

I enjoyed the story and the vampire world, the writing itself was pleasant enough that I want to continue the series.

  1. I read this one years ago. I didn't love it or hate it but I never read any further in the series. I have been reading the spin off series and do enjoy it so I think I want to give this one another try. I am glad you ended up enjoying it!

    1. I did see on your blog that you're reading the spin-off (Heirs of Chicagoland) and that's what made me pick up this series. I wanted to finish this before I stated Heirs only because I know that Elisa Sullivan is the child of Merit and Ethan. I just had to read about how that all came together.

      Have a wonderful day Carole.
