Love, loss, friendship, and the betrayals of the past all collide in this first women’s fiction novel from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (Autoboyography, Dating You / Hating You).

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

My thoughts…

Love and Other Words is a second chance romance between Macy and Elliot. It’s told in alternating timelines about when they fell in love and the present, all from Macy's perspective. Mace and Elliot bonded over their love of books and became best friends, who eventually fell in love during their teenage years. We follow Macy’s emotional journey through those years, it’s a journey with friendship, love, loss and heartbreak.

Eleven years later the two meet accidently at a coffee shop, the connection they shared is still there, but Mace has a guarded heart. We are left guessing what tore them apart, and whether this time around, true love will find a way from heartbreak. I really enjoyed both characters and wanted desperately to know what tore them apart. I was not expecting the emotional intensity from reading about what did happen all those years ago.

“You broke up with her last night?”
He nods … “You’re the love of my life. I assumed I would get over you eventually, but seeing you yesterday?” He shakes his head. “I couldn’t go home to someone else and pretend to love her with everything I have.”
― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

“I’ve been waiting for you to come home for eleven years. I’ll go anywhere you go.”
― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

I loved reading about Mace and Elliot friendship, they could talk about anything and shared a very close bond and I was rooting for them from the beginning. I’ve found myself completely absorbed in their story and I enjoyed it from the start. Love and Other Words is definitely my favorite Christina Lauren book, to date. Although I’ve heard just as wonder things about Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating, which I will be reading very soon.

Happy Reading!
