Kittens in Costume

Our Halloween festivities have ended and once again we had over 100 zombies, vampires and princesses that visited our house this evening. I thought I should probably share these cards before November!

Kittens in Costume is one of my favorite Halloween stamp sets and I think it may be the first set I bought from Close to My Heart many years ago. For these cards I used two of the four images from the set and the images are fairly small, the card size is 4.25 x 4.25. Both images are colored using Tombow and Close to My Heart markers and then blended using a Tombow Colorless Blender.

I told myself if I was going to start stamping again that I was going to limit my spending and try to resist all the latest and greatest supplies and images. So far, that’s not working to great! This week I made a quick stop at Hobby Lobby to look at Halloween decorations, of course I had to visit the stamp aisle, I was excited to see that all stamps were 50% off… bought a bunch of House Mouse and Happy Hoppers. The week before I attended at Stampin Up party and bought more goodies. I may have to challenge myself to a no spending challenge.

Resist, Resist, Resist!

Thanks for visiting me here at Inky Impressions, Jovi.

Wicked Lovely, Ink Exchange, Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely ~ Melissa Marr
Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty-especially if they learn of her Sight-and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. His is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost-regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; everything.

While this may have been about faeries, it definitely wasn't your average fairy tale.  It has just the right mixture of fantasy, adventure, suspense, friendship, and love. The love story in this book is gripping.  Very enjoyable read, I couldn't put it down.

Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely #2) ~ Melissa Marr
Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.
Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.

The tattoo does bring changes; not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

I have to admit that I didn’t like this book as well as I liked Wicked Lovely.  The first few chapters or so were disappointing to me when I realized that it was not exactly a sequel or a continuation of the story in Wicked Lovely.  Aislinn, Keenan and Seth are still around, but Aislinn's friend Leslie is the focus in this book and I couldn't bring myself to like the characters.

Fragile Eternity (Wicked Lovely #3) ~ Melissa Marr
Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone—but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he'd ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.

Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who'd always terrified her—but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she'd ever imagined.

All in all, it was an okay book. I enjoyed how the love triangle between Keenan, Asilinn and Seth is heightened, but after awhile it was redundant (Aislann loves Seth but is attracted to Keenan, Keenan loves Donia but wants Aislann, over and over and over and over.  I felt the book didn't move the story along as well as it could have.  I was rather disappointed when I realized the story didn’t end… she set it up for another one book and I felt cheated.  I’m not sure if I’ll continue reading this series.

Snoopy and his Sidekick

Snoopy and his Sidekick

I actually stamped a card; this is the first card I made in ten months!

In March I went through my supplies and gave a bunch of stuff away that I never used and packed some supplies away. Yesterday I had the urge to stamp, before I could make anything I had to rearrange supplies and place things back on shelves. Once I was ready to get started, I couldn’t remember how to cut a 12x12 to make a 4¼ x 5½… I wouldn’t tell you how many times I had to cut but finally I got it!

I received this stamp last year for Christmas from Austin and I promised him that the next card I make I’ll use this image… so here it is. For this card I used a really quick and simple layout… and not too many thrills. I think I did pretty well with my blending for not having much practice; I did go out of lines some. Can you see those mistakes? What do you think?

Thanks for visiting me at Inky Impressions and thanks for sticking with me for the past ten no stamping months, I really appreciate it! Jovi

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Wintergirls ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

This is not a book that I would typically read; my daughter Riley let me borrow it.  I didn't care for the writing style but I did enjoy the story.  It is written more like in thoughts- the narration is constantly interrupted with bits of Lia's haunted mind.  Wintergirls is a haunting and powerful book that takes you into the world of eating disorders. The story is emotional and raw and is a powerful and gripping story.

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

The Last Song ~ Nicholas Sparks
Seventeen-year-old Veronica 'Ronnie' Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father ...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story about love in its myriad forms - first love, the love between parents and children - that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that deeply felt relationships can break our hearts ...and heal them.

This is the first Nicholas Sparks book that I read and after reading it I had such a headache from the constant stream of tears!  It’s a love story of two teenagers/young adults, but its focus is on forgiving and loving as the main character learns to forgive her father and what his love for her really means. Very touching and would recommend it.  I’m looking forward to reading other Nicholas Sparks books.

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier

My Cousin Rachel ~ Daphne Du Maurier
Philip Ashley's older cousin Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Rome. Philip, the heir to Ambrose's beautiful English estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home. He is also suspicious. While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful English and Italian woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hinted that his love had turned to paranoia and fear.

Now Rachel has arrived at Philip's newly inherited estate. Could this exquisite woman, who seems to genuinely share Philip's grief at Ambrose's death, really be as cruel as Philip imagined? Or is she the kind, passionate woman whom Ambrose fell for... with a tremendous longing to be loved? Philip struggles to answer this question: Ambrose's estate, and his own future, will be destroyed if his answer is wrong.

I really liked this book. It was a little slow going at the beginning, but once I got into it I could hardly put it down.  This book keeps you guessing about his cousin Rachel.  The ending seemed to end rather suddenly, but overall it was an enjoyable read.  If you are a Du Maurier fan this is one of her best!
