My Bookish Goals for 2018 (TTT #1)

Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) is a weekly meme hosted by Jana, That Artsy Reader Girl. If you would like to participate, the schedule of upcoming topics can be found here. This week’s topic is Bookish Resolutions/Goals.

These are my bookish goals for 2018, in no specific order.

1. Goodreads Challenge Goal – Lower It
Over the past few years my reading goal was set between 100–250 books, and I was able to exceed those goals. This year I wanted to take it easy and not feel stressed in the Fall when time closes in. I want to take my time and enjoy the books I do read. This year my goal is 50 and I’m okay with that.

2. Read Outside My ‘Go to Genre’
I do tend to read more romance and young adults books. This year I would like to add more classics and non- fiction to my reading. Also, read books off the list of literary awards, The Man Booker Prize, National Book Award, Edgar Award and such.

3. Create a TBR Jar
Surprise myself by choosing a book from the jar. All the books I own physically and on Kindle will be listed individually on a piece of paper. Two picks a month.

4. Read Books I Own
I love my library, but I must stop adding my name to library holds and read the books I have.

5. Finish the Series
I have plenty to choose from, mostly it’s the last book in the series I need to finish.

6. Un-haul Books
I’m terrible about parting with books, it’s like I have some kind of emotional attachment to them. I really need to donate the books I didn’t enjoy, maybe it will become someone’s favorite.

7. Set a Monthly Spending Limit
I’m currently writing down the price of every book I purchase – to see what I actually spend and try to limit myself on future purchases. I can’t just go on a book buying ban, let’s face it… I am sure to have withdrawals.

8. Don’t Purchase an Entire Series
Until I’ve read the first book! Guilty, Guilty, Guilty… I want the entire series before I start reading it. It is a horrible and expensive habit I need to break.

9. Limit My Book Reviews
In 2017 I felt pressured to review EVERY book I finished. This year I’m not doing that, I would like to spend my time writing reviews for those books that I truly enjoyed, or feel strongly about. I don’t request arc’s, so I have no commitments to authors or publishers. I would also like to write the review for those books before I move onto reading the next book.

10. Spread the Love
Get more involved with the book community, visiting and leaving comments via blogs or YouTube, participate in weekly meme’s and join in book discussions.

Do you share any of the same goals that I have listed?  Thank you for visiting and have a wonderful day -J

  1. I like the idea of a monthly spending limit. I use the library a lot so I only spend a moderate amount of money. And I really like the tbr jar. However I tend to have wild moments of wanting to read a specific book so that wouldn’t work for me.

    1. I'm hoping the tbr jar will work for me. I'm a mood reader, hopefully by just picking two at the beginning of the month I will be in a mood one day ;)

  2. I always set my Goodreads goal at 50. I think it's a great number to aim for even if you exceed it every year.

I love that all of the books you own are in your jar. I put the top 15 I hope to read this year in mine to try to focus my selections. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck with your goals. :)

    1. Totally agree Jennifer, 50 is a great number to aim for, less stress towards the end of the year. I like your jar idea also, I may start to feel overwhelmed when I start adding hundreds of books to my jar.

  3. Getting more involved with the book community is a fabulous goal. There are so many wonderful people in it.

    1. I think many of us have this same goal, I'm not sure what it is about the need to accumulate books and then never get to.

  5. I need to get more involved with the book community as well. I have a small group of blogs I visit regularly and love them but I haven't been so good about finding new book friends. Glad I found you today :)

    1. So far my husband hasn't said much about my book buying habits. I feel that I spend way too much and I really need to limit myself. Also, be more mindful of the books I do buy and do not jump on the hype wagon.

  7. I love your idea of a TBR jar. I think I will try it. Though I get most of my books from the library so I will have to plan ahead.

You asked about the Classics Club Spins. Visit their website and join up.https://theclassicsclubblog.wordpress.com/how-to-join/
About three times a year they ask participants to list 20 classics from their list then on a given day someone spins and reports the number, match that number to your list and read that book. They usually give six weeks to finish a book. Sort of like your TBR jar.

  9. I'm going to try to participate in more Youtube book communities this year since there are so many booktubes out there that I haven't subscribe to yet. Great list!

    1. There is a lot of Young Adult channels (which I do enjoy watching), now I'm starting to see more of an older generations of booktubers and I have been finding a lot of new book recommendations from them as well.

    1. I've been listening to non-fiction on audio and I'm pleasantly surprised that I have been enjoying them, even though the subject matter isn't very pleasant.

  11. I completely feel you on almost all of your goals. Last year I put my goals on 60 and while I ended up reading a lot more it was just nice to not feel the pressure of having to hit that big goal. I ended up reading more than I ever had. I tried a book buying budget last year but that didn't work so well haha. I hope yours works better!

    Good luck!

    1. I'm not doing so good with my budget, I placed a order last night at B&N... I did save 20% off one book. I had to use my coupon. I'll try to be better next month. ;)

  12. Spreading the love is such an awesome goal. I find myself reading blogs, scrolling through Insta, and watching YT all of the time without commenting, but then as someone who makes YT videos and writes a blog it is so fun when someone comments, even if it is just to say hey! Definitely something I want to work on in 2018 as well : )

    1. I'm hopeful that I can make time to not only visit but comment as well. I see many new bloggers and You Tubers who have great content, but may feel a little discouraged because they are not getting comments or likes. Thank you for visiting.
