East of Eden by John Steinbeck

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

I did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did.... It's intimidating when you see how long it is! It’s basically an epic telling of the Cain and Abel story set at the turn of the century. It has everything in it--love and hate, good and evil, joy and tragedy. The characters touch your heart and break your heart. I would recommend it, although it isn’t a light and happy read.
